What matters in life? By that I mean, what truly matters? These are questions I find myself asking more frequently as I continue to get older. I don’t suppose there is a definitive answer to these questions but I have my growing suspicions that the list of most important things in life is a short one.
I am too often tempted to get caught in the thick of thin things. By this I mean things that in the end will matter very little. Like bank balances and budgets, renovations and retirement planning, entertainment or enterprise.
These things do have a role to play in my life. All work and no play of course makes Jack a dull boy, but sometimes I allow them to consume the best of my time, talents and energy.
I want to be better at being in the thick of thick things. Thick things? I mean relationships. of all the things that really matter, I believe relationships are perhaps the cardinal pursuit of life. I read about the growing loneliness in America and it is sad and probably unnecessary.
We are all probably guilty of investing too much in the faux connection offered by social media and messaging and too little in the real relationships. The remedy to loneliness is not another like, share or comment, I think it’s found in having just a handful of close, robust relationships.
I hope this does something to make life sweeter,
All the best,
Matthew, xo
