One year ago
Help us make life sweeter for everyone by sharing our newsletter with someone else. Thanks.
Yesterday was my 34th birthday which marked one year since I purchased our first cotton candy machine. It was a second-hand one I found on Facebook Marketplace for $120. It came with two cartons of sugar so that day I spun my first every cotton candy cone.
Since then we have started a business called Tastes Like Heaven and have spent the past year learning and slowly growing. I remember the first time we tried to sell our cotton candy, we did pre-packaged bags that we sold from our front-yard.
We sold a little, but we made far too much and most of it went to waste. I remember feeling so insecure as I sat there waiting to see if anyone would show up.
I still feel this insecurity a little or sometimes a lot whenever we set up at a new event or location. What if people don’t come? What if people don’t like me, my product or our business?
But people have come. I was blown away when we did our first big public event in Barboursville, WV, for their fireworks. We had a line all night long and it was fun to meet so many friendly and kind people. I was exhausted by the time we got home, but it showed me that what we started had potential.
Since then we have continued learning and growing and exploring and it hasn’t been easy. Sometimes I spend so much time planning and thinking that I fail to take action. I feel nervous still when I place a call or send an email. It’s getting better but it isn’t always easy, especially when the answer is no.
But something I am still learning, even more since we started this business, is that my confidence grows as I continue to make small actions and take small steps. I still have a long way to go, but I have more confidence today than I did one year ago.
I haven’t done anything remarkable, nor taken massive action, I have just tried to be diligent and keep going, even when it has felt intimidating. Perhaps you too could join me in taking action. Maybe you don’t want to start a business, but I am certain there is something you do want to achieve. Start small, take action consistently, and I am confident a year from now you’ll be closer to where you want to be.
I hope you have a sweet week!
